National Anthems
Although England does not officially have an anthem of its own, hymns such as ‘Jerusalem’, ‘I vow to thee, My Country’, ‘Land of Hope and Glory’ and ‘Nimrod’ are widely excepted as English national hymns. The unofficial Royal Navy anthem, ‘Heart of Oak’ has also been proposed.
‘God Save the Queen’ (the UK national anthem) is usually played for English sporting events (Football and Rugby Union), as has ‘Rule Britannia’ (usually against another home nation), ‘Land of Hope and Glory’ has been used for Rugby Union and the Commonwealth Games and ‘Jerusalem’ seems to be a firm favourite of the English Rugby fan.
In 1996, ‘Three Lions’ was the official song of the England Football Team.
